What does it mean to be pH balanced? What is alkaline and acidic?
When your body is pH balanced, it means that on a scale of 0-14, your optimum pH level would be a 7.365. This means that your body is equally alkaline and equally acidic. When your body has a low concentration of hydrogen ions, your body is alkaline and has a rating over 7.365. When your body has an excess concentration of hydrogen ions, your body is acidic and has a rating below 7.365. When the fluids in your cells are pH balanced, your cellular function is greatly improved. This holds true for all of the systems in your body including your bones, organs, and blood.
The pH balance is a direct result of the foods you choose to put into your body. The statement “fueling your body” takes on a whole new meaning. For example, foods themselves may be acidic such as tomatoes or lemon juice, but when you ingest them, they promote alkalinity in your body. The pH of the food does not indicate the net effect on your body. The “potential renal acid load” or PRAL of a food is what determines where it aligns within acid-alkaline balance. The PRAL is the value that measures acid excretion in your urine. The PRAL of a food can be acid forming or alkaline forming. Good choices are the key. When you eat items such as poultry and eggs, they are acid forming foods. But when you combine them with alkaline forming foods the net effect is neutral or alkaline.
Most people have more acidity in their body because of acid forming foods such as processed foods containing sugars, saturated fats, preservatives, white pastas, and white breads. These processed foods create an optimum environment for toxins, fungus, and disease. The acid forming foods also create blockages and inaccuracies in the electrical signals in your body which prevents your body from performing at optimum levels. Toxins produced in an overly acidic body reduce your ability to absorb proteins and minerals, which weakens the body’s ability to produce enzymes and hormones. Cell reconstruction and components of energy production are all affected. All of these factors cause fatigue and overall weakness. Ongoing acidic conditions in your body cause more serious health problems. Most Americans have a diet that is low in potassium and magnesium, while they are high in sodium and chloride which can result in chronic metabolic acidosis. This chronic metabolic acidosis has been linked to osteoporosis and other more severe ailments. When you think about how our bodies were designed, it seems quite logical. Our bodies are meant to absorb nutrients in natural foods. The modernization of society has resulted in consumption of products that our bodies were never meant to be able to process.
To counteract a harmful cellular environment, you must cleanse the cells in your body using nutrition. The principal of cellular balance is consuming 70% alkaline foods and 30% acidic foods. A person controls their pH balance by their choices of what they are putting into their body. When your body is pH balanced, foreign bodies cannot survive. Alkaline diets that are high in potassium, magnesium, and bicarbonate from fruits and vegetables result in lower chances of cancer, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, and other chronic diseases. Muscle mass is also preserved, which prevents common injuries in older individuals. Improved memory and cognitive functions are also benefits.
Achieving pH balance in your body comes down to choosing to fuel your body with the things it needs. This is not a “fad diet”. It is a lifestyle choice that helps your body function properly.
